Why the pool store costs more

A retail pool store buys chemicals, ships them to a storefront, pays rent on that storefront, staffs it, and marks the product up enough to cover all of it. That's a real business with real costs — but you're paying for the building every time you buy a jug of chlorine.

We buy the same chemicals in bulk at contractor pricing, and they go from the supplier to our truck to your pool. There's no store in the middle. We pass that through at our landed cost plus a small flat markup that covers handling and delivery, and the difference stays with you.

What that's worth in real money

For a typical 15,000-gallon North County pool — call it 4 gallons of liquid chlorine, 1 gallon of acid, and 2 tabs a week — here's the difference:

Your actual use varies — a pool in full sun in Escondido in August burns through more chlorine than a shaded pool in Encinitas in January. The percentage holds either way, because it's built into how we buy, not into a promotion.

Why we bill it separately

We could roll chemicals into one flat monthly number. Most companies do. The problem is that to make a flat number safe, you have to price it for the worst month of the year — which means you're overpaying for the other nine. Or the company eats it in the summer and makes it back by cutting corners somewhere you can't see.

So service is $150 a month, flat. Chemicals are their own itemized line at our cost plus the markup. You see exactly what went in your pool and exactly what it cost. In a hot month that line goes up. In winter it drops. Nobody's guessing.

The catch

There isn't much of one, but here's the honest version: this only applies to chemicals we supply as part of servicing your pool. We're not a retail counter — you can't stop by and buy a drum. And if you'd rather supply your own chemicals, that's fine too. Plenty of our customers do, and we'll just handle the service.
